Individualized Student Alternative Education Program
By Dr. Ted Kozlik, Trustee
Dr.
Margaret D. Edney, Coordinator of Student Services of the eighty-seven
schools in the Virginia Beach City Public Schools, presented an Individualized
Student Alternative Education program (ISAEP) which has experienced great
success in her district.
The ISAEP provides an opportunity for students in the Virginia Beach Schools, VA, ages 16-17 years old to work toward a General Education Development (GED) certificate without dropping out of school. The ISAEP was initially designed to reduce the district's dropout rate. Criteria for being considered for this program include: not performing academically; unlikely to complete a traditional or alternative high school program and considering dropping out of school.
Students who are enrolled in the ISAEP may receive additional support through some or all of the following options:
- Academic assistance
- Behavioral contracts
- Parent involvement opportunities
- Homework contracts
- In-school tutoring
- Teacher/adult mentor programs
- Referrals to professional staff (i.e. school psychologists, social workers, guidance counselors, ESL, 504 Committees and Special Education Committees).
