On May 19, 2025, President Donald Trump signed the Take It Down Act into law on, thereby criminalizing the use of artificial intelligence to create deepfake images without the depicted person’s consent. The Federal Trade Commission’s enforcement of removing nonconsensual deepfakes will begin within one year.

 The law aims to combat sexually explicit images generated by artificial intelligence and criminalizes the use of artificial intelligence to generate deepfake nude images without the depicted person’s consent.

The law also states that any person who publishes a deepfake image of a minor would be subject to fines, imprisonment for up to three years or both. Social media and related websites would be required to remove such content within 48 hours of a victim’s notice.
