On July 17, 2025, ten Republican senators made a similar plea that had previously been made in a July 10 letter by 32 Democratic senators to unfreeze over $6 billion in funds being withheld by the Office of Budget Management (OMB). In their plea, the GOP senators stated that they don’t believe the over $6 billion in withheld funds are being used to fund “radical left-wing programs,” as has been claimed by the OMB.
The letter also stated that withholding the funds, “is contrary to President Trump’s goal of returning K-12 education to the states.”
The federal education funds that the Trump administration has been withholding had already been appropriated by Congress and were to be doled out to states on July 1st.
